Lucio Fontana
Lucio Fontana
$5.00

"Concepts in space: Artworks as visual explanations of ideas Italian artist Lucio Fontana tore apart the modern art establishment--literally. Trained initially as a sculptor, Fontana (1899-1968) blurred the lines between painting and sculpture by creating works that combined both form and color in a spatial context, most famously exemplified by his slashed canvases of the 1950s and 60s. Fontana`s work was truly conceptual, in that the ideas he wanted to express were more important than the actual work itself; with titles like Concetto Spaziale (Spatial Concept) and Scultura Spaziale (Spatial Sculpture), his pieces served as visual explanations of his ideas. From his early work in collaborating with architects through his years in Buenos Aires (where, in the mid-1940s, he published the famous "White Manifesto" and "Technical Manifesto of Spatialism," among others), his experimental light installations of the early 1950s, and his later experiments with various media, this book covers the entire career of Italy`s pioneering abstract artist."

"In the history of twentieth century modernism, Henri Matisse is a calm and unstoppable revolution of creative genius.

Trained originally in the French classical manner, he was inspired by the Impressionists and Cézanne to create in a style that brought out the beauty of colour, form and line by reducing them to their essentials. While considered a leader of the Fauves and an inspiration to most of the great figures in modern art, he wasn't particularly interested in being associated with any particular school or trend. A family man who worked 'office hours' in his studio he defies the image of the artist as enfant terrible or tortured soul.

In a career spanning six decades, he produced masterpiece after masterpiece that constantly challenge how we perceive color and form."

This is Cezanne

$15.95

"Paul Cézanne challenged convention, and proposed new possibilities for modern art. He was remarkable for his ability to perceive and paint everyday places, people, and things in ways that revealed the multiplicity and beauty of vision, while also unveiling the deep, cohesive structures of the visible world.

But the intellectual and emotional difficulties of his achievements were considerable. Mainly self-taught, most of his career was plagued by rejection. The critics, and the public, disliked his paintings and, in 1884, Cézanne declared that Paris, the center of the nineteenth-century art world, had defeated him. Repeatedly, he retreated into self-doubt and bad temper.

This book follows Cézanne on his extraordinary artistic journey, focusing on his formative discoveries, made not in the flashy, fashionable metropolis but in provincial and rural France and often in isolation."
